PROJECT :
PRJ/2025/07/0001 : Installation of High Efficiency Wood Burning Cookstoves in Tanzania
DESCRIPTION :
Project Description: The project involves the distribution and installation of 100,000 improved cookstoves (ICS) in households across Tanzania. The stoves, model TLC-CQC Rocket Stoves, are designed to replace traditional three-stone fires and other inefficient devices that rely on non-renewable biomass (mainly firewood) for cooking. Each ICS is fabricated using local materials and enhances combustion efficiency, reducing fuelwood consumption, emissions, and exposure to indoor air pollution. The stove features include a metal top, pot skirt, and wood feeding support to optimize airflow and combustion . Objective: To reduce GHG emissions, deforestation, and household air pollution by introducing efficient biomass cookstoves that reduce fuelwood use in Tanzanian households. Baseline Scenario & Emissions Households traditionally use three-stone fire or conventional cookstoves without proper air supply or chimney systems. These baseline stoves operate with ~10% thermal efficiency and burn non-renewable woody biomass, primarily firewood. Typical fuelwood consumption per household using baseline stoves is approximately 3.73 tonnes per year. The default Net Calorific Value (NCV) for wood fuel is 0.0156 TJ/tonne. Emission factors are 112 tCO2/TJ for CO2 and 26.23 tCO2/TJ for non-CO2 GHGs. The default fraction of non-renewable biomass (fNRB) in Tanzania is estimated at 0.89. Baseline emission ● Biomass: 3.73 tonnes/household/year ● Energy content: 3.73 × 0.0156 = 0.0582 TJ ● Emissions: 0.0582 × (112 + 26.23) = 8.061 tCO2e/household/year Emission Reduction Calculations: ERy,i,j = By,savings,i,j × NCVwoodfuel × fNRB,y × (EFwf,CO2 + EFwf,nonCO2) × Ny,i,j × 0.95 Where: ● By,savings,i,j: Biomass saved per ICS/year (tonnes) ● NC Woodfuel: 0.0156 TJ/tonne ● fNRB,y: 0.89 (fraction of non-renewable biomass) ● EFwf,CO2: 112 tCO2/TJ ● EFwf,nonCO2: 26.23 tCO2/TJ ● Ny,i,j: Number of ICS operational in year y Annual Baseline Biomass Savings and Emission Reductions: ● Year 1: 2.97 t biomass saved/ICS; 100,000 ICS; 541,837 tCO2e ● Year 2: 2.93 t biomass saved/ICS; 90,000 ICS; 480,603 tCO2e ● Total (10 years): 2,853,391 tCO2e Note: Project emissions are reported as zero per methodology VMR0006. Leakage is accounted for using a conservative default discount factor of 0.95. Environmental Safeguards: ● Biodiversity and Ecosystems: Reduction in biomass use (~2.2 t/stove/year) helps preserve forest cover, reducing habitat degradation. ● Water Resources: Improved cookstoves reduce pressure on forest watersheds, maintaining hydrological services. ● Soils and Forests: Reduced deforestation maintains soil structure and forest ecosystem integrity. ● Carbon Stocks: The project contributes to conservation of terrestrial carbon stocks by avoiding biomass extraction. Land cover remains stratified as natural woodland and mixed farming areas. Social Safeguards: ● Cultural and Socioeconomic Rights: No forced adoption; cookstoves are voluntarily received. Respect for traditional cooking practices is maintained. ● Indigenous and Local Community Rights: Project conducted with community consultations; no reported land disputes. ● Employment and Livelihoods: Local employment in stove assembly, distribution, training, and monitoring; expected 50 jobs with gender inclusion. ● Health and Safety: Reduction in indoor air pollution (PM2.5), improved household health, and decreased burn risks. ● Free Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC): Consent obtained from stove users transferring carbon rights to the project proponent. ● Grievance Mechanism: Established procedures for complaints and resolution; implemented via phone contacts and field agents. ● Compliance: In line with Tanzanian environmental laws (EMA 2004), no conflicting statutes or mandates.
